Sermon: The Soul and Meaning

Soul Part 2
The Soul and Meaning – Matthew 16:26
Listen Here:

We’ve seen the scenario play out in movies, books and T.V. shows. Somebody wants something so bad they’re willing to give anything for it…including their soul. It never goes well and the character finds him or herself in quite the predicament. In reality, giving up our soul for anything but Jesus is absolutely catastrophic. As Jesus shows us, there is nothing this world can offer that is worth losing our soul for because our souls have invaluable meaning.

1.  Read Matthew 16:26

“What good will it be for a man if he gains the whole world, yet forfeits his soul? Or what can a man give in exchange for his soul?”

2.  Discussion Questions:

  1. What do you want the most in life?

  2. Think about your soul. Do you know how meaningful it is to God? How does this understanding help you?

  3. How can the significance of your soul shape the way you think about life?

  4. What are some ways you can remind yourself that no matter what this world might offer, nothing is worth losing your soul over?

3. Challenge

Sometimes it can be difficult to see things from an eternal perspective, especially when the things we think we really want are right in front of us. The Bible teaches us about the meaning of the soul and how significant it is. From that perspective, how can we view this life with all it has to offer and still see the value and beauty of Jesus?

4.  Commit to Memory:

“What good will it be for a man if he gains the whole world, yet forfeits his soul? Or what can a man give in exchange for his soul?”
