When you hear the word “hope,” what comes to mind?

Would you consider yourself a hopeful person?

Why do we need hope? Why is hope so important for us to hold on to?

Engage:

Read Romans 13:15

If you look at God through the lens of your situation, you’ll be a prisoner of your circumstance. But if you look at your situation through the lens of God’s promises, you’ll be a prisoner of hope. What do you think of that?

In 1 Kings 19:4, Elijah was at an extreme low point. Have you ever been in a place like that? How did, (or how is) holding onto hope help/helping you get through that?

Fatigue can crush our hope. Elijah learned that rest, nourishment and taking a break can restore us. Do you agree with that? Do you think if you rested more, were better nourished and took a break from time to time that you would be more hopeful?

Isolation can also crush our hope. You’re not the only one who experiences hurt. Are you in community with others? Do you have people to share your burdens with? Trying to shoulder all of our problems alone will eventually break us down and devastate us. How have you seen this to be true?

Worry crushes hope as well. We all know what it is to worry. Why is it easier to worry than to be hopeful?

Finally, what is the difference between resting in Christ and resting from Christ?

Apply:

Write down your some of your hopes. Look at the example of Elijah and the things that crush hope. Compare those things against your list. Do you need help anywhere? How can your group help you? How can you help your group?

Spend time praying with each other. Pray for hope. Pray against fatigue, isolation and worry. Spend time thanking God for giving us hope in Jesus and for the strength to trust Him.

This week’s memory verse is Acts 4:33. Spend time with your family and group learning it together.
